Modular Design.  We hear the term more and more these days to describe design.  Modular design is simply design of a system in parts, be it house, hotel or chair.

Where I find modular design exciting is how it is connecting art and the functional world.  Artist are using the modular medium to design cutting edge and functional pieces of art.

These chairs were designed by Lazerian, you can visit their website here.  Lazerian is creating some outstanding pieces using the modular format.  With works ranging from Pokies lamps to tables and materials that range from paper to wood, Lazerian is really melding form and function.  Using a CNC Router Lazerian brings the 2-D design to 3-D life.

With so many items being re-imagined through a designer’s eye I wonder, are we seeing a new modernism developing in this century?  Has the ability to inexpensively create functional pieces of art risen to a level as to challenge the mass production of things that are all function and no form?  In turn, is this new challenge forcing design into everything?
